Common Mental Health Issues

ADHD

Common Symptoms:

  • Excessive daydreaming
  • Forgetfulness
  • Leaving tasks incomplete (such as homework or chores)

Alcohol and Substance Abuse

Common Symptoms:

  • Poor school performance or declining grades
  • Lying, particularly about where they have been or what they were doing while out
  • Personality changes, such as increased irritability, hostility or aggression

Attachment and Adoption Issues

Common Symptoms:

  • Significant problems in their interpersonal relationships
  • Anxious-attached: might call or text multiple times, self-harm, threaten to leave or be sexually seductive
  • Avoidant-attached: using alcohol or drugs, isolating, self-harming, or lacking empathy

Autism Spectrum Disorders

Common Symptoms:

  • Lack of interest in other people
  • Difficulty experiencing empathy for others
  • Repetitive body movements (such as spinning, rocking, or hand flapping)

Bipolar Disorder

Common Symptoms:

  • Excessive talking, rapid speech or racing thoughts
  • Thoughts or intentions of suicide
  • Elevated mood and exaggerated optimism

Conduct Disorder

Common Symptoms:

  • Aggressive behavior: bullying, cruelty to animals or people, fighting, using weapons, or forcing someone into unwanted sexual activity.
  • Destruction of property
  • Deceitful behavior: lying, shoplifting, breaking into homes or cars with the intention to steal, or stealing from others.

Dyslexia

Common Symptoms:

  • Slow and difficult reading
  • Difficulty with reading comprehension
  • Difficulty recalling known words

Eating Disorders

Common Symptoms:

  • An extreme fear of gaining weight
  • Excessive exercise and calorie restriction
  • Talking about being fat

Identity Development

Common Symptoms:

  • Acting in uncharacteristic ways (for example, they may lie or deceive, begin experimenting with adult behaviors such as drinking or sexual activity; might be moody, sarcastic, or distant)
  • Rebellion
  • Preoccupation with fitting in (example: by wearing the right clothes or having the right things; may become cliquish)

Learning Disabilities

Common Symptoms:

  • Trouble with reading, writing, spelling, or math
  • Difficulty concentrating, paying attention to and remembering details
  • Trouble with organization

Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Common Symptoms:

  • Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (believes they are inherently superior; may exaggerate achievements)
  • Needs excessive amounts of admiration
  • Lacks empathy

Self-harm

Common Symptoms:

  • Scratching or pinching skin with fingernails to the point of drawing blood.
  • Cutting or carving marks or symbols into the skin
  • Banging or punching objects to the point of bruising or causing damage to oneself

Sensory Processing Disorder

Common Symptoms:

  • Inability to tolerate sensory stimuli (such as bright lights, noise, or touch)
  • Unresponsiveness to sensory stimuli (for example, does not react to extreme heat or cold)
  • Clumsiness and lack of coordination (may bump into things regularly or have difficulty with motor skills)

Suicide

Common Symptoms:

  • Talking about wanting to die or wanting to kill themselves
  • Looking for a way to kill themselves, such as buying a gun or hoarding medication
  • Feeling hopeless or as if there is no reason to live
