Program Summary

Program Type: Young Adult Treatment and Transition Program for Young Women
Location: Needville and Sugar Land, Texas
Typical Length of Stay: 10–12 months
Student Profile: Young women ages 18 through 24 with moderate to severe emotional, social, and/or behavioral issues that could prevent a safe transition to independence. Some common issues our young women struggle with include dual diagnosis, personality disorders, bipolar, post-traumatic stress, addiction, severe depression and anxiety, and poor body image. Many of our students have histories of multiple failed placements and, along with their families, are desperate for a solution that will finally work.

All young women need a bridge to adulthood...

At Fulshear, we work with young women who, for reasons of long-term emotional struggle and failure, may find the prospect of independence terrifying. Many of our young women have struggled through multiple therapeutic placements without lasting success and, as a result, feel little confidence for a bright future. Fulshear offers real hope through a program of intensive and clinically sophisticated treatment, health and wellness education, academics, and experiential life-skills training, all of which is delivered in the context of a loving and supportive community. Our goal with every girl is that Fulshear be her last treatment stop, providing a bridge from failure to success, from pain to healing, and from fearful dependence to confident independence.

Our Program: Empowering Young Women Towards Healthy Independence

Fulshear students engage in a program that moves from structure and intensive treatment to real-world experiences and a curriculum of practical life skills, work, and academics. This graduated approach makes the journey to independence more manageable. As a result, even young women who have struggled with entrenched emotional problems and/or addictions are able to graduate with a sense of purpose and options – options that include college, career, and self-sufficiency.

Using a holistic model, our masters and Ph.D.-level therapists, academic advisors, and mentors offer a program of experiential and classroom academics, individual and group therapy, chemical dependency programming, life-skills training, career training, and recreational therapy. Girls learn to build balance into their lives in order to maximize their chances of success in the "real" world.

For those struggling with substance abuse or dependency issues, our Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors assess each individual to determine the most appropriate plan of support and education while at Fulshear. Each treatment plan is tailored to meet the specific needs of each young woman. Our approach includes cognitive behavioral strategies, systems theory, relapse prevention programming, equine therapy, and psychosocial modalities. Achieving and experiencing sobriety is often the first step towards greater clarity, insight, and success.

Our three-phase program begins with basic skill development and intensive therapy. This first phase helps girls build therapeutic trust with staff and peers so that they can begin to develop an accurate understanding of themselves. Phase two allows young women to take on more campus leadership and responsibility, gradually shifting their focus from themselves to others. As our students learn to manage themselves and lead others in the safety of the campus community, they gain increased independence and the privilege of engaging in off-campus activities. In our third and final phase, young women who have demonstrated sustained leadership and responsibility move to an apartment campus in Sugar Land, to live, work and attend college in preparation for independence.

I hope you all know, at every moment, during every interaction, what an incredible impact you have on so many lives. What an awesome responsibility. And you do it so well. Thank you for everything you have done for our daughter and our family.
